Ottawa, October 19, 2011 – For immediate release

2012 marks the fifth year of the Prix Rideau Awards and to celebrate this important milestone, we are sending out a call for design of a new Rideau statuette.
Founded in 2006 to celebrate, encourage and promote French and English locally produced professional theatre and its artists through an annual awards gala, the Prix Rideau Awards fosters artistic excellence and promotes communication between both theatrical communities. Currently, the awards handed out are framed certificates, but as our organization matures, we are looking to celebrate our artists through an award, be it a statuette or trophy, that is itself a work of art.
The following criteria should be considered when submitting a design concept:

  • size;
  • affordability;
  • although design should reflect theatre and our mandate, we discourage designs that are kitsch or cliché. We are looking for a classic design that can be produced year after year;
  • sustainability of materials – the statues should be built to last;
  • there must be a designated area to include small plaque for award details;
  • ease at which the design can be reproduced.

We are aiming to present a prototype of the winning design during the April 2012 awards ceremony. The new awards will then be presented to winners during the April 2013 awards ceremony. In addition to being credited with the award design, the winner will receive an honorarium. Copyright of the award will be maintained by the Prix Rideau Awards.
Submissions must be sent by Friday, January 27, 2012 and should include sketches, colours, list of materials, design specs and/or a model.
